Hinkmond’s JavaFX Mobile Dojo
steveonjava | February 19, 2010In case you missed the big event last week, I have finished post-processing and uploading the video. We took the quality up a notch by getting a direct screen capture from the presenter laptop. This means that you will not only get crystal clear slides, but also full-screen demos and a nice tight head-shot of the presenter. This moves our video setup firmly up from a Level 4 to a premium Level 1 operation as detailed in Stephan Janssen’s blog.
Without further ado, here is the Parleys version of Hinkmond’s JavaFX Mobile Dojo talk:
I got a lot of requests for just the slides last time, so I am also making them available here:
Finally, a quick plug for our next SvJugFx event. We will be doing a double feature with folks from the Java Store and JFrog Artifactory presenting back-to-back. Even if you plan to attend online, make sure to sign-up here:

This is great to hear, but I really wish Oracle would make some kind of announcements regarding availability of JavaFX for all the platforms they claim it will run on. First and foremost, Android: there was a demo in 2008, and since then, nothing. This is a huge disappointment, as Android presents probably the largest opportunity for JavaFX to make a showing, especially considering that it will find its way into many tablet form-factor devices that could really take advantage of the cross-platform nature. Next up, Symbian and Blackberry–the Java ME platform is already in there, so why does it seem like development for these platforms is at a standstill? And finally, Bluray–they keep talking and talking about it, but AFAIK not a single Bluray player supports JavaFX.
Also in the talk there was a question about multitouch– Hinkmond made some comment about it being hypothetically supported across platforms, but the fact is that JavaFX still doesn’t support it. With Windows 7 and Android (not to mention Adobe Flex and Qt) all supporting multitouch now, JavaFX needs to get with the program with multitouch as well.
Oracle needs to make some clear statements or have some kind of demos to show soon of JavaFX on these mobile platforms and on Bluray, otherwise developers will get scared and stay away from it. It would be a real shame for Oracle considering the potential of the platform, and a real setback for developers like myself who would like to be able to target multiple devices at once with rich interactive experiences.
